Steve Armstrong
Managing Director
Logically Secure

Steve started working in the security arena in 1994 whilst serving in the UK Royal Air Force. He specialized in the technical aspects of IT security from 1997 onward, and before retiring from active duty, he led the RAF’s penetration and TEMPEST testing teams. He founded Logically Secure in 2006 to provide specialist security advice to UK Government departments, defence contractors, the online video gaming industry, and both music and film labels worldwide.

Steve has worked on a wide variety of media projects including most recently a lead role in the implementation team responsible for drafting the latest version of the CDSA Digital Security Standard. Working with the principle directors of the content delivery storage association, Electronic Arts and NBC Universal Film the implementation team developed an ISO based audit and certification security standard now being adopted across a wide cross section of the Media Industry.

Other relevant recent consultancy roles within media include testing and risk assessment on bespoke client operating platforms. Steve has over the past five years fulfilled a number of internal IT security risk assessments on behalf of the EMI and Universal Music Group content protection departments across a broad cross section of the digital supply chain. Examples of audits carried out include SAVVIS, SONY DADC, Deluxe amongst others. Steve has also assisted with other media supply chain projects including NAGRA and Research in Motion.

Steve drafted the Compliance Testing elements of the UK Defence Manual of Security; outside Government he contributed to the latest release of the Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual (OSSTMM) and wrote the SME targeted Certified Digital Security (CDS) standard. Still very much hands on, he performs Penetration Testing, Wireless Hacking and Incident Response for Logically Secure’s clients as well as teaching several courses for SANS in the EMEA territory.
